Do you remember when you learned to tie your shoes? Many of us were taught to make two ‘bunny ears’, cross them and tuck one through the loop. If that was the only way you were shown to tie laces you might not even consider there are other ways to tie a shoe. And then one day, after tripping over your untied laces time and time again, someone suggests you tie your shoes with ‘Nana’s Knot’. ‘What’s this?’ you reply. Why bother learning a new way when the old way works pretty good – at least most of the time. Then you learn that the improved method is not only faster to tie the shoes, but the knot holds the laces securely in place all day. With ‘Nana’s Knot’ you only make one ‘bunny ear’ but then you double wrap the other lace and tuck through creating a type of double knot – which pulls out effortlessly at the end of the day. Eureka! A better way!
Similarly we have ideas, thoughts and beliefs that keep us stuck in one way of thinking or pattern of action. Yet after awhile that singular vision may begin to trip us up. Obviously the first concept that must be addressed is willingness to see there might be a better way. You have to allow space that if you are not getting the results you want in your life, it might be time to look at doing things differently. My mother use to repeat the saying, ‘If you always do what did, you’ll always get what you always got.’
Secondly, we need to have a beginners mind – an empty cup or a clean slate that is ready to be filled. This is accomplished by identifying and clearing the negative or self limiting thoughts and beliefs that are already taking up room. Many people believe all it takes is thinking ‘happy thoughts’ or repeating positive affirmations to make changes. In truth, you have to clear a space for those changes to reside BEFORE they have a place to connect. When the power outlets already have appliances plugged in, something has to be unplugged before you can power up another piece of equipment. Once you have opened a space for your new, improved labor saving devices (or beliefs and feelings) – you are then able to power them up.
